The church is named after Bishop Robert Caldwell who came as missionary from Ireland.

Bishop Robert Caldwell was a pioneer LMS missionary to Southern part of India from a small village called ATRIUM situated at the bank of River Clady, near Belfast in ULSTER, Northern Ireland. His wife was Elisa Caldwell

He came to Idayangudi in the year 1841 and to Tuticorin in 1883. He rode on horses and reached the present Tirunelveli and Tuticorin Districts. But he never lost the zeal for the lord. He felt the need for the school to consolidate and strengthen the converts. In continuation of his mission, he started Calwell School and VGS. He was then ordained as Bishop. He loved Tamil people and learnt Tamil with great interest. Later he became a Tamil Scholar by producing a comparative grammar in Tamil. His book was the first comparative study of Dravidian languages and is still used by Tamil scholars
